Stories: Kenya

Our Work in Kenya

As of 2016 (through various programs and partnerships):
Over 1,000 schools supported in western Kenya
Over 600,000 students receiving safe water this year alone
Over 7,000 filters distributed thus far.

Counties covered: Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga
Additional target counties: Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu

YOUR GIFT: would help us expand to additional vulnerable schools in our target counties. Several of these counties have experienced recent outbreaks of waterborne disease including cholera and typhoid. We have received requests from these county governments and from the Ministry of Health to expand our programs to reach them.

How Safe water for Schools programs work

One filter (LifeStraw Community) lasts 3-5 years, capable of filtering approximately 100,000 liters of water. Each filter serves 75-100 school children; number of filters allocated according to school population.

Comprehensive safe water, hygiene and sanitation education is provided to the school at the time of
installation and during follow-up visits. Curriculum is designed to cover filter specifics but also includes messaging about the importance of healthy behaviors such as handwashing, use of latrines, brushing teeth with safe water, making water safe at home etc.
