Reviews

Great product

"Excellent, easy set-up. Filled many 7 gallon tanks daily. Looks like a space probe."

lifestraw community

"the order process was smooth, unit arrived quickly, well packaged, no damage. Assembly was simple, unit works well, water flow seems to be fast. Love the backflush handle, not sure why there are holes in the top of the red jug, but that does make a little mess during the backflush due to leaking water. I bought the kit to plumb into the water line so it is always full, that was a nice option. this was purchased as a gift to a missionary in Guatemala for a school he works with."

Well built

"My family is comforted in these stressful times, by insuring our overall long term safety. And a necessity for camping trips."

Brian C. (5/5)

Arrived Safely

"So, we've tucked this away for emergency use but it arrived intact. I will say, videos are great but I sure would appreciate a more robust instruction manual included because if we ARE using this in an emergency situation, we certainly are not guaranteed Internet to trouble shoot."

Emily K. (5/5)

Love not having to store so much water!

"I haven't used this yet but I love that I don't have to store gallons and gallons of water, and that I'll be able to help out my elderly neighbors as well as extended family."

susan m. (5/5)

Great product!

"Packaging was great and really good videos from the company on setting this product up. I hope to not need to use it in the near future, but feel some comfort knowing we can get clean water if needed!"

Jennifer L. (5/5)

Doesn’t take everything out!!!

"While I am confident in the ability of this product to make my water safe it did not improve the taste of our well water. We were hoping to be able to make coffee and koolaid palatable with this but that is not the case. We will continue to use reverse osmosis until we can find a better solution."

Bernard K. (3/5)

Drinking Water here in Asheville!

"I am very satisfied and pleased with the Life Straw Community. It is set up in our house and we are using it almost daily as here in Asheville we are still without potable water. People have asked why you would need this instead of just boiling water and I gave them a number of reasons as to the advantages."

Jack C. (5/5)

"product is well made and filters fine. there is a very notable "from the hose" plastic taste that may be nostalgic for some but makes the water less appealing. Hoping this is just new filter funk and it will go away eventually, but it's definitely something people need to know about."

Aaron (3/5)

One less thing to worry about

"In these crazy times of life right now, it makes me feel better that I can at least provide clean water to my family"

Q&A

There are several Lifestraw company responses in this Q&A about storage and expiration dates, specifically saying that there is NO shelf life or expiration date for the filter whether it's new or has been used and cleaned/stored in place where it won't freeze. However, there is also a company response from 01/2025 saying the filter has a shelf life of 5 years. This is VERY confusing, and there's nothing in the manual or on the support page about expiration dates for the filter. Does the Lifestraw Community filter have an unlimited shelf life when it has never been used? Is there a shelf life when it has been used but is stored properly? Or is there a maximum 5-year shelf life/expiration time on the filters?
Hi there and thank you for your question. I can see why it would be confusing! LifeStraw membrane filters do not have a printed expiration date. When stored properly and kept unused, the membrane materials are stable for long term storage. For best quality assurance and traceability, unused LifeStraw membrane filters are intended to be used within about 5 years of purchase. This is a conservative guideline, not a hard cutoff, and it does not mean performance suddenly changes at five years. LifeStraw has tested representative membrane filters under long term storage conditions and confirmed they continue to meet performance standards for bacteria, parasites, viruses (where applicable), and turbidity after many, many years of storage.
I live in the Minneapolis area, about four hours south of the Mississippi headwaters. I live on the banks of the river- would this device make the river water safe for drinking in an emergency?
Yes, our LifeStraw filters can make river water significantly safer to drink in an emergency. However, the best option depends on the specific contaminants present in the Mississippi River near you. Our LifeStraw Peak Series or LifeStraw Go bottles with the membrane microfilter can: ✔ Remove 99.999999% of bacteria (including E. coli) ✔ Remove 99.999% of parasites (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium) ✔ Remove 99.999% of microplastics However, the Mississippi River is also exposed to chemical pollutants, heavy metals, and agricultural runoff. For additional protection against lead, mercury, pesticides, and PFAS, you would need a LifeStraw product with carbon filtration, such as the LifeStraw Home Pitcher, LifeStraw Go with Advanced Filter, or LifeStraw Mission with Carbon Filter. For long-term or emergency preparedness, we recommend testing your local water and considering a gravity-fed or higher-capacity filtration system like the LifeStraw Mission or Community units, which provide advanced filtration for larger water needs.
Hello, If we used this on sink water (well filtered to remove particulate) would soaps be an issue for the filter? Oils? Grease? We plan to scrape and polish dishes before washing them, then resuing the water with this.
Soap, oil, and grease can negatively affect the filter in a LifeStraw Home Pitcher. How These Substances Impact the Filter: ❌ Soap – Can leave behind residue that is difficult to rinse out, potentially clogging the filter or affecting the taste of water. ❌ Oil & Grease – These can coat the membrane microfilter, reducing its ability to properly filter water and significantly shortening its lifespan.
How long does this last in storage unused?
The LifeStraw Community filter has a shelf life of 5 years when stored properly and not in use. Once in use, the membrane microfilter lasts for up to 26,000 gallons (100,000 liters), depending on water quality and usage. For best longevity, store it in a cool, dry place, and make sure to maintain as directed if it has been used.
We live where the river goes into a lake and the water is very muddy with a lot of clay Will the life straw work for us? And is the cartridge the same as a filter?
Thank you for reaching out with your question about using the LifeStraw Community in areas where the river flows into a lake, resulting in very muddy water with a lot of clay. The LifeStraw Community is designed to handle turbid water and effectively removes bacteria, parasites, viruses, microplastics, and other contaminants. However, water with high levels of sediment, such as clay, can reduce the flow rate and clog the filter more quickly. To optimize the performance and longevity of your LifeStraw Community in these conditions, we recommend prefiltering or using a mesh cloth to help remove larger particles and reduce the load on the filter and backwashing the unit more frequently. Yes the cartridge is the filter. This is included in the Community upon purchase. Hope this helps answer your question!
What about swimming pool water ?
Hi there! Because pool water may have an abundance of salt and chemicals beyond chlorine, we do not recommend filtering pool water with your LifeStraw.
Which of your systems works purifying salt water?
Hi, Currently, no LifeStraw product is designed to desalinate water or remove salt from saltwater. LifeStraw filters are excellent for removing bacteria, parasites, microplastics, dirt, and certain chemicals from freshwater sources, but they are not equipped to handle the desalination process required for making saltwater drinkable. Desalination typically requires more advanced technologies such as reverse osmosis or distillation, which are not part of LifeStraw’s product line.
What's the difference between the LifeStraw Community and LifeStraw Community Autofill?
Hi, The AutoFill feature refers to the fact that this system allows for continuous filtration without the need for manual refilling. I hope that helps answer your question.
Does it come with a filter
LifeStraw Team LifeStraw Community AutoFill is a high-capacity, gravity-fed water filtration system designed for use in areas where safe drinking water is scarce, particularly in communities, schools, and other larger group settings. It comes with a filter installed that has a Lifetime of 26,000 gallons, enough for 100 people for 3-5 years.
What is the difference between LifeStraw Community Autofill and LifeStraw Community? Besides just the price.
The LifeStraw Community and Community AutoFill are high-capacity, gravity-fed water filtration systems designed for use in areas where safe drinking water is scarce, particularly in communities, schools, and other larger group settings. The difference between the two is the Autofill system. This feature refers to the fact that this system allows for continuous filtration without the need for manual refilling. Here’s a breakdown of their key features: High-Capacity Filtration: It can filter large volumes of water, typically 12 liters at a time, making it ideal for schools, clinics, and emergency response situations. Gravity-Fed System: The system works by using gravity to pull water through its filtration elements, requiring no electricity or pumping, making it practical in off-grid or rural environments. Removes Contaminants: It removes bacteria, parasites, viruses, and microplastics from water. This makes it effective in treating water from unimproved sources, such as rivers, lakes, or unprotected wells. Sustainability: The AutoFill system is designed for long-term use, with replaceable filters and easy maintenance. Scalability: Multiple units can be used together to serve larger populations, making it adaptable to the needs of different communities.
